Piper Piston Family
Cherokee to Malibu.
One shop across the family.
Piper's piston lineup spans four decades of design philosophy: fixed-gear Cherokees, retractable Arrows, high-performance Saratogas, and pressurized Malibu and Meridian airframes. Each has its own maintenance personality. We publish guidance for the spectrum because a PA-28 and a PA-46 barely share a parts catalog.
Powerplant
Lycoming & Continental Across the Line
PA-28 Cherokees typically run Lycoming O-320 or O-360 variants. PA-32 Saratogas operate Lycoming IO-540 or TIO-540 engines. PA-46 Malibus carry either Continental TSIO-550 (Mirage / Matrix) or Lycoming TIO-540 (early Malibu) powerplants. We support the full powerplant range with platform-specific borescope, trend, and overhaul protocols.
Avionics
Panel Upgrades for the Piper Fleet
Cherokees are frequent candidates for G3X Touch and GFC 500 autopilot installs. Saratogas and Malibus often run Avidyne IFD or Garmin GTN stacks with GFC 600 autopilots. Panel planning across the Piper family is an exercise in STC availability, airframe value, and owner flying profile. We will be honest about what upgrades return their cost.
Inspection Rhythm
What the Piper family rewards.
Piper airframes reward careful attention to structure, fuel system integrity, and, on retractable models, landing gear discipline. The failure points are well-documented across the fleet; the value of a good shop is applying them to your specific aircraft.
- Wing spar inspection per AD, with owner-visible documentation of hours, cycles, and next-due interval.
- Fuel bladder condition inspection and fuel selector valve function check: frequent Piper annual findings.
- Landing gear retraction cycle, motor current draw, and transmission backlash on retractable-gear aircraft.
- Stabilator hinge condition, counterweight integrity, and trim actuator condition on the PA-28 family.
- Turbocharger mounting, exhaust coupling, and wastegate function on turbocharged Saratogas and Malibus.
- Pressurization system inspection on PA-46 Malibu / Mirage: door seal, outflow valve, and pressure-vessel integrity.
